Bach Mai Hospital's Poison Control Center has just received a patient who was bitten by a snake and was admitted with a fever. His wrist was blackened and starting to rot.

The patient said his family raises snakes, and it is currently the time for snakes to mate and lay eggs. "When I took the male snake out of the cage, I was unfortunately bitten. I should have worn protective gear, but I was careless and was attacked. Afterwards, I went to a traditional healer to apply medicine to "detoxify" the snake venom, but my condition did not improve," said Mr. L.

After seeing no improvement, Mr. L. went to the hospital for treatment, at which point the bite wound had become necrotic. The doctor said that after treating the wound, he would have to have surgery to remove the necrotic skin, which would take a long time to heal.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital, Vietnam has recorded about 70 species of venomous snakes. Normally, from May to October, the center receives more patients bitten by snakes because this is the breeding season for snakes.

"People also have the habit of catching snakes when they find them for food, to soak in alcohol... leading to snake bites. Therefore, to prevent this, the first thing is not to catch snakes, instead, you can use other measures to repel snakes.

In addition, some mistakes in first aid when bitten by a venomous snake are applying herbal medicine, incising the snake bite wound, electrocuting... In my opinion, people should absolutely not incise or squeeze the wound to remove the venom because it causes bleeding, infection and increased venom absorption. Also, do not apply medicine with leaves because it can cause wound infection and delay the victim's arrival at a medical facility.

When bitten by a snake, the victim must be quickly put on a stretcher/gurney, and not allowed to move or walk to avoid spreading the poison. The medical facility will determine the type of snake bite and inject the appropriate antivenom serum," Dr. Nguyen advised.
