Although not directly examining or treating, doctors who perform testing always play an important role in the patient's recovery process.
Features
The working atmosphere at the Laboratory Department (Hai Duong General Hospital) is always bustling and urgent every morning. Thousands of specimens are run through the machine to analyze the indicators. The process from receiving to checking and returning results is carried out quickly and urgently, but must be careful and thorough.
The Laboratory Department of Hai Duong General Hospital has 30 medical staff, of which only Head of Department Dang Hong Van is a Master, a doctor, the rest are bachelors, technicians. Before joining this department, Dr. Van had worked in the medical examination and treatment department. Therefore, more than anyone, Mr. Van understands the specific characteristics of a laboratory doctor compared to other specialties.
Although he does not come into contact with patients, Dr. Van has a good understanding of their medical records and medical histories. He said that test results are the basis for doctors to have effective and appropriate treatment plans. Despite the large workload, Dr. Van is always careful with each test result. "You have to be sure about the patient's condition to detect abnormalities in the test results," Dr. Van said.
Laboratory doctors always have to race against time but are not allowed to make mistakes. That is the affirmation of Master, Doctor Nguyen Thi Hanh, Head of the Department of Hematology - Biochemistry (Hai Duong Children's Hospital). Doctor Hanh has been working in hematology and biochemistry testing for 15 years. Ms. Hanh said that the occupational disease of laboratory doctors is to always be suspicious. Doubt to see indicators that are not consistent with clinical practice. Doubt also to analyze and approve the most accurate test results. Only then can we ensure effective treatment for patients.
Every day, the Department of Hematology and Biochemistry of Hai Duong Children's Hospital receives several hundred specimens. However, the peculiarity of pediatric patients is that the disease progresses very quickly. If the test results are not available in time, the golden opportunity for treatment will be missed. Therefore, Dr. Hanh always closely monitors each specimen and each test result. For emergency tests, it is even more urgent.
On the other hand, it is the time of changing seasons so children are susceptible to infectious diseases and dangerous complications. The task of the testing doctor is also heavier. Doctor Hanh smiled and said: “Testing must be done quickly but not in a hurry. Because if you rush, mistakes can easily occur, affecting the patient's treatment process.”
Overcome pressure
Test results are the basis for diagnosing and treating diseases. Therefore, doctors and laboratory technicians face a large workload and a lot of pressure. However, they are not discouraged or pessimistic, but always find ways to adapt and overcome the pressure.
The Laboratory Department of Hoa Binh General Hospital always has to operate at full capacity to meet the medical examination and treatment needs of the people.
According to Master, Doctor Vu Ba Viet Phuong, Head of the Laboratory Department, the busiest time of the department is in the morning. All specimens of inpatients, outpatients or patients coming for examination are brought to the department. Test results effectively support clinical doctors in diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases. Therefore, the team of doctors and laboratory technicians are always ready for work, not allowed to be subjective or negligent.
The staff of the Laboratory Department of Hai Duong General Hospital rarely have morning meetings, and if they do, they only last a few minutes. During this time, the entire department must focus on carrying out the testing process from collecting samples, transporting and processing specimens to reading, approving and returning results. Compared to other departments, medical staff in the Laboratory Department often go to work 1 hour earlier. Chemicals and materials for testing are proactively prepared the afternoon before so that testing can be carried out immediately the next morning.
“In the past, we witnessed many patients arriving at the hospital from 3-4 am to queue and wait, so everyone in the department was very impatient. Therefore, we proactively worked early, helping people have timely test results to transfer to specialized departments for diagnosis and treatment, without having to wait too long,” Dr. Van informed.
Thanks to the seriousness, responsibility, thoughtfulness and dedication of the team of doctors and testing staff, patients receive early results of their sample analysis. At hospitals in Hai Duong, many samples taken early, around 8am on the same day, have results for medical examination and treatment. For patients with severe and critical conditions, the testing doctor directly discusses and provides information and test results to the treating doctor for timely intervention and treatment.
Although they do not directly treat patients, all patients are related to the laboratory doctor. Although the work is quiet and stressful, the laboratory doctors are always diligent and devoted to the health of the patients.
