AI-integrated camera system in Japanese supermarket causes many people to worry

An artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance camera system being tested in Japanese supermarkets has many people worried. What is the reason for this?

Japanese technology company Fujitsu is developing and testing a surveillance camera system integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) that can analyze customer behavior at supermarkets to create customized advertising content, suitable to customers' interests when going to the supermarket.

Accordingly, this surveillance camera system will record the reactions, hand gestures and body language of customers in the supermarket, then use the AI software system to analyze and identify the types of products, brands... that users are interested in.

Based on AI analysis data, this system will display text or image advertisements about products and brands that users are interested in to suggest them to buy. These advertisements will be displayed on signs or advertising screens near the user's location in the supermarket.

"This system allows AI to observe customer behavior, such as focusing on a product, looking at prices or comparing products with each other... thereby providing attractive advertising content, suitable for customers' interests, helping to encourage them to buy more," said a Fujitsu representative about the company's AI-integrated camera system.

Fujitsu believes its system will be the future of advertising in supermarkets or convenience stores.

"Retailers will have to change the way they advertise, approach users with new methods, and give users a more engaging and friendly experience," added a Fujitsu representative.

Although the new technology holds great promise for advertising and reaching customers, many people in Japan have spoken out against it, with many even saying they will boycott any supermarket that adopts Fujitsu's new technology.

Many people believe that this new technology will track and record all activities, purchasing habits and build a profile of users' behavior, which makes them feel their privacy is being violated and feel like their every action is being tracked when shopping in the supermarket.

"I know every supermarket has a surveillance camera system to prevent theft, but cameras with integrated AI to monitor and record every customer's behavior and activities are really scary. It feels like I'm being monitored for every little action, this is hard to accept," commented a Twitter user in Japan.

"This camera system makes me think of online services that track internet users to show them relevant ads. Now the tracking has moved from the internet to the outside world," another Twitter user commented.

To reassure users, Fujitsu said that the AI-integrated surveillance camera system will bring clear benefits to retailers, helping to increase sales and overcome staff shortages by automating the customer consultation process.

Fujitsu affirms that all data recorded by the system is processed automatically and strictly protects customer privacy.

Fujitsu's AI-integrated surveillance camera system is currently being tested at supermarkets in Hofu City, Japan. Fujitsu plans to extend the testing process until October, before launching the commercial product by the end of 2023.
