The decision to completely suspend the Comprehensive Military Agreement with North Korea will be submitted to the South Korean President for signature after the South Korean Cabinet approved the decision on June 4.
According to Yonhap news agency, on June 4, the South Korean Cabinet approved a decision to completely suspend the Comprehensive Military Agreement with North Korea.
Previously, on June 3, the South Korean National Security Council (NSC) decided to suspend the above agreement "until trust is restored" between the two regions.
The decision was approved at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. The decision will be submitted to President Yoon Suk Yeol for signature.
The comprehensive military agreement between South Korea and North Korea was signed by the defense ministers of the two sides within the framework of the inter-Korean summit on September 19, 2018 in Pyongyang.
The agreement aims to halt all hostile acts between the two Koreas, establish maritime buffer zones and turn the demilitarized zone (DMZ) into a land of peace.
In fact, the South Korean government partially suspended the agreement in November 2023 after North Korea successfully launched a military spy satellite.
With the partial suspension of the agreement, the no-fly zone around the border between the two Koreas was abolished, allowing South Korea to resume reconnaissance and surveillance activities in the area.
