The South Korean military has detected more than 90 balloons suspected to have originated from North Korea and flown across the inter-Korean border.
Yonhap News Agency (South Korea) reported on the evening of May 28 that the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed the discovery of many unidentified objects in the border area of Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. The JCS advised people in the area not to touch these objects and to report to the police or military if they discover them.
As of the morning of May 29, 90 balloons had been spotted. Some had fallen to the ground, while others were still moving in the sky.
South Korean police and soldiers are collecting the fallen balloons. They were not carrying propaganda leaflets but trash.
Previously, on May 26, North Korea announced that it would spread "mountains of waste paper and trash" in the border area in response to South Korea spreading anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets.
For years, conservative South Korean activists have launched balloons carrying propaganda leaflets into North Korea. North Korea has repeatedly demanded an end to the leafleting program, a longstanding issue that has caused tension between Pyongyang and Seoul.
