Scoring a brace in the 3-0 win over Slovenia in Nations League Group B3, Erling Haaland became Norway's top scorer with 34 goals.
Haaland made history in his first match as Norway captain, replacing Martin Odegaard, who was absent due to injury. In the 7th minute, Antonio Nusa shot from outside the box, which Jan Oblak could not catch, and Haaland swooped in to open the scoring.
In the 62nd minute, Alexander Sorloth crossed the ball just in time for Haaland to place his left foot diagonally across the corner, completing his double. These were his 33rd and 34th goals respectively, helping Haaland become the top scorer in Norwegian football history.
The previous record belonged to the legendary Jorgen Juve with 33 goals in 45 matches set in 1937. Haaland only needed 36 matches, since his debut against Malta in 2019, to break the 87-year-old scoring record.
"I'm proud to break such a long-standing record. It's an important and historic achievement," the 24-year-old striker said after the match. "I'm happy to be able to play for the national team for many more years. I'm enjoying it all, feeling healthy. It's been a long time since I had so much energy on the pitch. My team also had a very good match."
The win over Slovenia helped Norway maintain the top spot in Group 3 League B with seven points, three points ahead of Austria and Slovenia themselves. Norway will visit Austria on October 13. Haaland reminded the team: "Even though we won at home, the team cannot be satisfied, we must be alert to prepare for the upcoming difficult away match."
After the match, Haaland seemed to announce another good news: he was about to become a father. The 24-year-old striker posted a photo of himself sucking his thumb and tucking a football into his shirt on Instagram with the message "Soon" and a baby emoji.
Haaland has kept his love life private since playing professionally, and only made Isabel Johansen public in 2023. Johansen is also a player in his home country and works part-time in a fashion store.
