There are growing concerns that AI will have an unsavory effect on the electoral process.

In a blog post on March 12, Google announced that it has begun imposing restrictions on election-related queries that the Gemini chatbot will answer.

This is to ensure that the information provided on this important topic is of high quality and trustworthy. Google also says it is constantly working to improve its protections.

A Google spokesperson told CNBC that the changes reflect the company's pre-planned election outreach strategy.

The new restrictions are being imposed in preparation for multiple elections taking place around the world in 2024 and are being implemented with caution.

Google made the announcement after pulling its artificial intelligence image-generating tool last month amid controversy, including inaccurate information and controversial feedback.

The company introduced the tool in early February through Gemini — Google's main AI platform.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's DeepMind, said on a panel at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona last month that they had taken the feature offline to fix the problem. He hoped to bring it back online in the coming weeks, admitting that the product "wasn't working as intended."

The news also comes as tech platforms prepare for a major election year around the world.

The rise of AI-generated content has raised serious concerns about election-related misinformation, with the amount of content increasing 900% year-over-year.

“There is reason to be seriously concerned about how AI could be used to mislead voters in campaigns,” Josh Becker, a Democratic senator from California, told CNBC in an interview last month.
