Ford recalls more than 144,000 pickup trucks due to rear camera freeze error

According to Reuters, Ford is recalling more than 144,000 Maverick pickup trucks from 2022-2024 in the US. The cause, announced in a report by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is due to a rearview camera image problem.

Specifically, the report describes that the image displayed on the Maverick's rearview camera can "freeze" when reversing. This problem causes the image displayed on the screen to be distorted compared to the actual position of the vehicle and its surroundings, thereby increasing the risk of a collision.

Ford first learned of the issue in June 2024, after which it conducted tests on the entire vehicle system. Through this, the company discovered a memory leak in the software that could cause the image on the rear camera screen to freeze. In addition, Ford also discovered four other vulnerabilities that could cause the rear camera image to not display or to be delayed.

The American automaker said it has received four warranty claims, 22 complaints and two accidents related to this issue, but fortunately no injuries have been recorded.

Since it is a software error, the solution is also very simple, which is through an update. However, this process cannot be done online and requires the owner to take the vehicle to the dealer. The recall notice will be sent to customers from September 30.

This is not the first time Ford has recalled the Maverick recently. Previously in May, the American car company had to recall more than 8,300 Mavericks due to a software error that could cause the car to automatically shift into neutral while on the road.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Ford is temporarily the automaker with the most vehicle recalls in the US, both in terms of the number of vehicles and recalls. Specifically, Ford and its subsidiary Lincoln had to carry out 31 recalls, affecting nearly 3.7 million cars in this country.
