On February 3, the European Union (EU) high representative for foreign policy Josep Borrell called on all parties to avoid escalating tensions in the Middle East after the US conducted airstrikes on locations in Syria and Iraq.

Speaking at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Josep Borrell said each side should try to avoid an explosion. He pointed out that the Middle East was “a powder keg that could explode”, with the conflict in the Gaza Strip, violence along the Lebanese border, bombings in Iraq and Syria and attacks on Red Sea shipping. The EU therefore called on all sides to avoid escalating tensions.

The call comes as the US launched airstrikes against more than 80 sites believed to be used by regional militias in Iraq and Syria on February 2. Earlier, a US military base in Jordan was attacked by drones, killing and injuring many people. US President Joe Biden pledged to take retaliatory action.

The EU is also preparing to deploy a naval mission in the Red Sea to help protect international shipping from attacks by Houthi forces in Yemen. Mr Borrell said the mission would be protective, not carry out ground attacks on the Houthis.

In a related development, the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said 16 people were killed, including civilians, and 25 others were injured in US airstrikes on locations in the country. The Iraqi Prime Minister's office criticized the airstrikes as a violation of the country's sovereignty, and said the Baghdad government was not informed in advance about the airstrikes.

The announcement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's Office stated that the presence of the US-led coalition in the region has become a reason for threatening security and stability in Iraq, causing the country to be involved in regional and international conflicts.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry also issued a statement saying that the US airstrikes violated the sovereignty and territorial independence of Iraq and Syria, another strategic mistake that could increase tensions in this volatile region.
