The funding is expected to help people affected by humanitarian crises in the region and enhance disaster preparedness in disaster-prone areas.

The announcement was made on the occasion of the European Union (EU)-Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum and the EU-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Conference held in Brussels on February 2.

The event provided an opportunity to discuss cooperation between the above regions in areas of mutual interest, including disaster management and emergency response.

European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič stressed that several countries in the Asia-Pacific region such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines, Nepal... are facing many urgent situations and challenges ranging from conflicts to environmental issues.

This €56 million grant will help EU partners in the host country provide support to the most vulnerable people, while strengthening the capacity of local authorities to respond to natural disasters.

According to Mr. Janez Lenarčič, Asia-Pacific is a region vulnerable to socio-economic degradation and the risks of climate change. The upcoming return of El Niño phenomenon will likely exacerbate existing vulnerabilities in this region.
