German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has once again spoken out against sending Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine and allowing German weapons to be used for strikes inside Russian territory.

Speaking at the Social Democratic Party (SPD) congress in Berlin on November 22, Chancellor Scholz stressed: “We have stated that we do not want to provide Ukraine with cruise missiles capable of attacking targets deep inside Russia and we have also stated that we will not allow such use of the heavy equipment we have provided.”

“People feel scared and anxious. On this issue, I pledge to exercise restraint so as not to cause further tension,” he added.

Kiev has long asked Berlin to supply the Taurus, a cruise missile that is said to be similar to the British Storm Shadow that has been delivered to Ukraine. However, the German-Swedish missile has a longer range of up to 500 km. Mr Scholz has repeatedly ruled out supplying the Taurus to Ukraine, saying it would pose a serious risk of escalation.

The debate over the need to deploy Taurus missiles to Kiev has heated up again in Germany after the US allowed Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles to launch attacks on Russian territory.
