The National Assembly Standing Committee passed a resolution to temporarily suspend the performance of duties and powers of a National Assembly deputy with Bac Giang Provincial Party Secretary Duong Van Thai so that the authorities can initiate prosecution and temporary detention.
On the evening of May 1, Secretary General of the National Assembly Bui Van Cuong issued a statement allowing the prosecution, temporary detention, search of residence and workplace, and temporary suspension of the performance of duties and powers of a deputy of the 15th National Assembly for Mr. Duong Van Thai, Secretary of the Bac Giang Provincial Party Committee.
Accordingly, on April 26, based on legal provisions, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution 1046 agreeing to the proposal of the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Procuracy to prosecute, temporarily detain, and search the residence and workplace of Mr. Duong Van Thai, a deputy of the 15th National Assembly, in accordance with legal provisions.
At the same time, temporarily suspend the performance of duties and powers of a National Assembly delegate for Mr. Duong Van Thai, a National Assembly delegate of the 15th tenure, from the date of the decision to prosecute the accused.
Mr. Duong Van Thai was born in 1970, from Bac Giang. He has a PhD in economics.
Mr. Thai grew up as a cultural, information and sports officer of Bac Giang town, then a tax officer of the Bac Giang town Tax Department.
In 2006, Mr. Thai became Vice Chairman of Bac Giang City People's Committee and then Chairman of Bac Giang City.
In 2014, he became Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province and then Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province (since 2019). In October 2020, he was elected Secretary of the Bac Giang Provincial Party Committee.
At the 13th National Party Congress, he was elected to the 13th Party Central Committee, holding the position of Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Bac Giang province for the 2021-2026 term.
Since July 2021, he was elected as a delegate of the 15th National Assembly, Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Bac Giang province.
Previously, on April 15, the Ministry of Public Security prosecuted and temporarily detained Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thuan An Group Joint Stock Company, along with 5 others, including 2 leaders of Thuan An and 3 officials of Bac Giang province, for the crimes of violating bidding regulations causing serious consequences and giving and receiving bribes.
Among them, Mr. Nguyen Van Thao, Director of the Project Management Board for Investment in Construction of Traffic and Agricultural Works of Bac Giang Province, Mr. Dam Van Cuong, Deputy Director and Mr. Hoang The Du, Head of the Project Management Board of Bac Giang Province, were all arrested for violating bidding regulations causing serious consequences.
On April 22, when expanding the investigation into the case at Thuan An Group, the Ministry of Public Security prosecuted and temporarily detained Mr. Pham Thai Ha, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Office and Assistant to the National Assembly Chairman, for the crime of taking advantage of his position and power to influence others for personal gain.
