Kylian Mbappe missed the chance to equalize when he missed a penalty, causing Real Madrid to lose 1-2 to Athletic Bilbao in round 16 of La Liga.

In the 68th minute, when Real were trailing 0-1, centre-back Antonio Rudiger was punched in the back of the head by goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty. From the 11m mark, Mbappe shot to the right, was blocked by Agirrezabala, and then a Bilbao player rushed back to clear the ball.

In the 0-2 loss to Liverpool in the 5th round of the Champions League a week ago, the French striker also missed a penalty from a similar shot. Mbappe has missed 2 out of 5 penalties for Real in all competitions, the worst record among players playing in La Liga this season.

At San Mames on December 4, Mbappe played as a striker with Rodrygo. He played the full 90 minutes, touched the ball 44 times, successfully dribbled twice, shot three times off target and missed two clear chances. The 25-year-old striker put the ball in the net in the 14th minute, but the goal was disallowed.

In the first half, Real were deadlocked, only managing three shots and achieving an expected goals (xG) of 0.08. This is the royal team's worst performance in the first 45 minutes of an away match in all competitions this season.

The surprise came at the beginning of the second half, when Nico Williams crossed from the left wing with a curling ball, causing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to be unable to catch it, allowing Alex Berenguer to rush in and finish close to the goal to open the scoring.

After missing a penalty, Mbappe helped Real find an equalizer. In the 78th minute, the French striker drifted to the left wing and then turned to the center, finishing with his right foot, forcing Agirrezabala to push the ball away. Jude Bellingham rushed in and kicked the ball with his left foot into the home team's net.

But Carlo Ancelotti's team still left San Mames empty-handed. In the 80th minute, Federico Valverde lost the ball in midfield, allowing substitute Gorka Guruzeta to charge into the penalty area and shoot into the near corner past Thibaut Courtois, sealing the 2-1 score.

Real have been in a slump, winning six and losing five of their last 11 games in all competitions. Carlo Ancelotti's side won 52, drew 17 and lost just four of their previous 73 games.

Bilbao ended a run of 18 games without a win against Real in La Liga, drawing 5 and losing 13, since a 1-0 win in March 2015.

Real also missed the opportunity to close the gap with the top team Barca when they are still 4 points behind their opponent and have played 1 less match. On December 7, Mbappe and his teammates will visit Girona in round 17 of La Liga.
