After 36 consecutive unbeaten matches in all competitions, Real were defeated in France early this morning. In the 45th minute, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga used his hand to block the ball in Real's penalty area, causing the visitors to be awarded a penalty. Striker Jonathan David kicked the penalty into the top right corner, scoring the only goal of the match.

Before this match, the last team to beat Real in the Champions League was Man City in the second leg of the 2022-2023 semi-finals, at the Etihad Stadium. Few people expected the next team to defeat Carlo Ancelotti's team to be Lille, when the French club only finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season.

In all competitions, Real have gone 36 games unbeaten since losing to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey in January 2024. According to the Opta power index, Lille is ranked 37th in the world, behind Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. In contrast, Real are ranked second in the world, behind Man City.

Due to his recent recovery from injury, Mbappe did not start this match. Coach Ancelotti gave the opportunity to 18-year-old striker Endrick. At the end of the first half, the Brazilian had a chance to equalize with a close-range rebound, but the ball flew over the bar. This situation had a 60% chance of scoring, and was also the away team's best chance of the match.

Ancelotti upped the ante in the second half, bringing on Mbappe in the 57th minute, much to the boos of the French crowd. However, the 26-year-old striker seemed to be out of form and failed to create any significant chances. The defending champions only dominated the final minutes of the match, but Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler all missed good chances.

This is the first time since 2016 that Real have failed to win three consecutive away games in the Champions League. 23-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier also had a memorable match with six saves, helping Lille win an important match to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

This weekend, Real hosts Villarreal in round 9 of La Liga.
