17 defendants, former leaders of departments, agencies and officials in Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc, were sentenced to prison for violations in granting permits to foreign workers.
This morning (October 20), the People's Court of Binh Duong province sentenced 17 defendants in the case of abusing their positions and powers while performing official duties; falsifying documents of agencies and organizations; organizing others to stay in Vietnam illegally; and giving and receiving bribes.
The case was brought to trial on October 9, lasting for 5 days. After the trial ended, the panel of judges deliberated until October 20.
Specifically, defendant Nguyen Kien Cuong, former specialist of the Labor Policy Department (Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Binh Duong) was sentenced to 16 years in prison for accepting bribes of more than VND8.3 billion.
Former Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Binh Duong province, Le Minh Quoc Cuong, was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for abusing his position and power while performing official duties.
The group of defendants, including Deputy Directors of the Industrial Park Management Board of Binh Duong province, including Nguyen Thanh Trung and Nguyen Thanh Nhan, were both sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison; Defendant Dang Quang Viet was sentenced to 1 year in prison.
Defendant Hoang Thanh (former Head of the Labor Management Department of the Binh Duong Industrial Park Management Board) was sentenced to 13 years in prison; Defendant Dinh Thai Tuan (former Deputy Head of the Investment-Enterprise-Labor Management Department of the Binh Phuoc Economic Zone Management Board) was sentenced to 7 years in prison for bribery.
The defendants, who are business leaders and freelance workers, were also sentenced to different terms.
Specifically, defendant Sam Nhit Sau was sentenced to 2 years and 7 months in prison; defendant Tran Mai Hong was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison. Defendant Nguyen Khanh Van was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison but was given a suspended sentence because she is raising a young child.
The remaining defendants were prosecuted for the crimes of forging documents of agencies and organizations, giving bribes and organizing others to stay in Vietnam illegally and were sentenced by the People's Court to prison terms ranging from 1 year to 12 years.
