The Taste Atlas website has listed the world's 100 best rice dishes, including 4 Vietnamese dishes.

The website known as the "world culinary map" Taste Atlas announced the list of the world's 100 most delicious dishes made from rice in 2023. Of which, Vietnam has 4 representatives: broken rice, banh tet, banh beo and xoi. Taste Atlas describes these dishes as follows:

Broken rice

Broken rice is a traditional Vietnamese dish often sold as street food. The main ingredient of this dish is broken rice grains that are usually discarded after the milling process. But today it is a typical dish of Ho Chi Minh City.

Broken rice has a similar texture to regular rice, only smaller. Broken rice is served with a variety of dishes such as fried eggs, pork skin mixed with rice powder, grilled pork ribs or crispy fried fish cakes. Common side dishes include chopped green onions, herbs, tomatoes, sliced ​​cucumbers, pickles or dipping sauces.

Banh tet

Banh tet, a southern Vietnamese specialty, is made from sticky rice with a filling of mung beans and pork and wrapped in banana leaves. The cakes are then boiled or steamed. When eaten, the banana leaves are peeled off and the long, cylindrical cakes are cut into round pieces.

Banana leaves are used to wrap the cakes because they give them a unique aroma and flavor. The cakes are often tied with a red ribbon or string to create a festive atmosphere. Because traditionally, banh tet is prepared and served during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.

Banh beo

Banh beo is a famous Vietnamese steamed cake, consisting of main ingredients such as rice flour, fish sauce, green chili, shrimp or pork. In addition, vermicelli, roasted peanuts or fried onions can be added to the cake to enhance the flavor.

Traditional banh beo is served in a ceramic bowl with a bamboo spoon for eating. It is believed that the most important part of a good banh beo is the hollow in the middle of the cake which is used to hold the savory, flavorful fillings.

Sticky rice

With many variations, xoi is one of Vietnam’s favorite dishes. Visitors can easily find this dish anywhere, from street vendors to traditional and high-end restaurants. Xoi is made from sticky rice and can be prepared as savory or sweet.

Traditionally, sticky rice is wrapped in banana leaves, and is most commonly enjoyed as a breakfast meal because it is portable, cheap, and delicious. Sticky rice is also eaten as a snack during the day or as a dessert. In many mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, sticky rice is a staple in daily family meals.
