Vietnamese girl marries a Western man 40 years older than her, has to lie and say he's her "boyfriend's father"

Despite the geographical distance and age gap, the couple Bui Thi Thuy Tien (32 years old, Vung Tau) and Ross Carter Stiles (75 years old, Australian) still have a happy life.

Ross Carter and Thuy Tien are thousands of kilometers apart, but fate still makes them meet and stick together.

The two met 6 years ago at a restaurant, bar and hotel for foreigners in Vung Tau City (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province). This is also where Tien worked as a waitress.

When she first met Ross Carter, Tien didn't think about a long-distance relationship because of the large age gap between them. After many meetings, the two became close, talked more and eventually developed feelings for each other.

When she met Ross Carter, Thuy Tien was often told by people that she wanted to be rich so she dated an old man. “Hearing such gossip made me very sad, because he was not as rich as many people thought, and he did not have much property left because he had divided it all after his divorce from his ex-wife. When he met Tien, Ross Carter was already retired and living on his pension,” Thuy Tien said.

Despite the large age gap, the two are quite compatible and easily find common ground. Ross Carter always gives in and takes care of his girlfriend both physically and mentally. He is not addicted to alcohol, does not smoke, and although he hates noise, he is funny and likes to make others laugh. Not only that, Ross Carter also scores points for being able to build planes and ships without going to any school.

During their stay in Vietnam, the couple had many memorable trips and experiences. Once, Tien and her boyfriend went to enjoy the sea breeze and drink smoothies. When they returned, Ross Carter had a stomachache, vomited continuously, and had to go to the emergency room. Tien said: “At that time, I was scared pale, afraid that he would not survive. Luckily, thanks to early detection, Ross Carter was taken to the hospital and treated promptly.”

One time, the two went to Hoi An, Ross Carter bought Tien a small ring but without any promise. Two years later, he returned from Australia to Vietnam, bought a wedding ring, knelt down and proposed to Thuy Tien.

Tien's parents divorced when she was quite young, and Tien lived with her mother. When her mother found out about her daughter's relationship, she tried her best to stop it because she was afraid that the foreign man was not serious. As for her father, Tien was afraid that he would object, so she lied that Ross Carter was her boyfriend's father. Only later, when the couple had a child together, did she tell her father the truth. Luckily, Tien's father was open-minded and accepted it.

They have been together for 5 years with many beautiful memories.

“My father is sympathetic, understanding and has become close to my husband. He helps take care of the baby and gives him gifts and money. Ross Carter knows that Vietnamese culture requires children to respect and be filial to their parents, so he tries to get along with and take care of his mother, even though he is older than her. But perhaps because he is too difficult, his mother still does not consider Ross Carter a relative,” Tien shared.

In contrast to the relationship between the foreign son-in-law and his mother-in-law, the relationship between Tien and her husband’s family members is very close. Every time Tien “video calls” to Australia, Ross Carter’s children always welcome her and chat happily. Everyone is very excited and looks forward to visiting Vietnam in the near future.

Tien was also led around the house by her husband's daughter-in-law, introduced to each room, the scenery, and the pets in the house. "Receiving so much love from my husband's family members, I put aside all my worries and believed that this would be my new family," the young girl confided.

Tien and Ross Carter planned to have a small, simple wedding. She planned to invite a few of Ross Carter's friends who were in Vietnam, her parents, and an aunt. However, the wedding plans were ruined by the pandemic because Ross Carter's friends returned home and were stuck in Australia.

Although they could not hold a wedding, the two were legally recognized by a marriage certificate. What is more wonderful, the proof of their true love is that baby Anne T. Stiles was born in June 2021. The baby is the emotional bond between Thuy Tien and her husband. The baby is smart and active like her father, and is loved by everyone wherever she goes.

Ross Carter has been in Vietnam for 5 years now. He has personally celebrated 2 Vietnamese Tet seasons and is preparing for another year of celebrating New Year's Eve here.

Ross Carter shared: “This is my second home. I love the country and the Vietnamese people, I love Asian culture and the traditional Tet. My wife told me a lot about Vietnamese culture, about the custom of worshipping Ong Cong and Ong Tao, about going to pray at churches or pagodas, wearing Ao Dai to wish each other a happy new year and giving each other lucky money... This is the third year I celebrate Tet in Vietnam, the feeling is just like the first time, very excited”.

With a few days left until Tet, Thuy Tien has prepared a banh tet, a chicken, and half a kilo of Chinese sausage to give to her mother. Her mother has also bought Anne T. Stiles two ao dai for the whole family to take spring photos.
