In a press release issued on February 11, the Cambodian Ministry of Health cited the test results from the National Institute of Public Health two days earlier confirming three new cases of monkeypox detected in the districts of Dangkor, Toul Kork and Por Senchey (Phnom Penh) and are being monitored and treated at the hospital. With the three newly discovered cases, the total number of monkeypox cases recorded in Cambodia is now 6 since the beginning of 2024 and 9 since the first case was recorded in July 2022.

The Cambodian Ministry of Health said the newly discovered cases showed that monkeypox infections in the Southeast Asian country were increasing in line with global trends. According to information released on January 25 by the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox has been recorded in 117 countries with more than 93,000 cases, including 176 deaths.

In that spirit, the Cambodian Ministry of Health calls on and reminds people to pay attention to their own health and that of their families, to prevent and contain the risk of monkeypox outbreaks, to carefully study the methods of transmission and to strictly comply with disease prevention measures as recommended by the authorities.

According to the recommendations of the above ministry, monkeypox virus is transmitted from person to person through sexual intercourse with an infected person in any form, through direct contact with open wounds, secretions, saliva, respiratory droplets and household items such as clothes, mattresses, towels, bowls, spoons, glasses... In addition, this virus is also transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and after birth through direct contact, if the pregnant woman or father and mother are infected with monkeypox virus.

The most recent case of monkeypox was reported in Cambodia on February 5, following two cases in early January 2024. The first case of monkeypox was reported in Cambodia on July 23, 2022, in a male Nigerian citizen who entered the country from Thailand.

Monkeypox is a disease that is endemic in Africa, but in 2022, the number of cases in European countries increased dramatically, causing the WHO to declare a global health emergency for monkeypox in July of the same year. Symptoms of the disease can be easily recognized such as high fever, muscle pain, lymph nodes, rash... Usually, this disease can last 2-4 weeks and the incubation period before symptoms appear is from 5 to 21 days.
