Female tennis player Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh has reached the final match of the Southeast Asian qualifying round of table tennis and is only one match away from a ticket to the 2024 Olympics.
Dieu Khanh's journey to the final was quite arduous. Starting with a dramatic 4-3 comeback win over opponent Zhou Jingyi (Singapore) after being down 2-0, in the following match, Dieu Khanh led 2-0 against athlete Laude Angelou Joyce of the Philippines but lost 2-4. It was not until the last match of the group stage, a 4-1 victory over opponent Chang Li Sian Alice of Malaysia, that the Ninh Thuan player took the top spot in Group 2 and officially entered the semi-finals.
In the semi-final match on the afternoon of May 9 in Thailand, Dieu Khanh's confrontation with Philippine tennis player Cruz Kheith brought excitement to the fans watching live. The opponent used a pimpled side (backside) to create slippery shots, unstable ball trajectory and counter-spin causing many difficulties. Dieu Khanh took a 3-0 lead with the scores of 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 but lost at least 2 match-points and then narrowly lost the next 3 games 12-14, 10-12, 8-11.
Only in the deciding set, with more composure and luck in situations where Cruz Kheith's forehand shots were unsuccessful, Dieu Khanh took advantage of the opportunity to rise up and win 11-6, thereby winning 4-3 overall and getting a ticket to the final.
Dieu Khanh's opponent in the decisive match for a place in the 2024 Olympics is Zeng Jian. The Singaporean tennis player born in 1996 just won the gold medal in the women's singles at the 32nd SEA Games and is also the highest ranked player at 59th in the world among the 8 athletes participating in the 2024 Olympics qualifying round in the Southeast Asian region.
In an interview with reporters from Thailand, Coach Doan Kien Quoc emphasized that Dieu Khanh's success was well-deserved because the Vietnamese female tennis player had demonstrated her courage and will in the competition. This was the basis for Dieu Khanh to create a surprise against a highly rated opponent in the decisive final match.
* In the men's singles, although the biggest hope Nguyen Anh Tu stopped with 3 defeats in the group stage, tennis player Dinh Anh Hoang created a surprise with explosive matches. He won the right to enter the quarterfinals in the second place of group 2 after 1 win and 1 loss.
Dinh Anh Hoang will face Sanguansin Phakpoom in the semi-finals. The Thai player born in 1983 has a big advantage as he has only played 2 matches and entered the semi-finals by winning Group 1, while Dinh Anh Hoang has played 3 matches. Phakpoom is a familiar opponent of Vietnamese table tennis, having competed since the 22nd SEA Games and is highly regarded for his experience.
Coach Doan Kien Quoc commented that Anh Hoang has performed very well and played confidently since the group stage. The match against Phakpoom will be very difficult but hopefully Hoang will overcome the pressure, show his true ability and win the opportunity to advance to the final.
