On October 24, Vietnam's number 1 female badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh made a historic step forward when she entered the top 20 of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings for the first time.
According to the latest BWF rankings, Nguyen Thuy Linh has a total of 45,550 points, up 4 places from 24th to 20th in the world. This is also the highest ranking in the career of the tennis player born in 1997 from Phu Tho.
In the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifying rankings, Nguyen Thuy Linh also rose to 15th place in the women's singles and is among the players qualified for the Olympics. However, the official list will not be finalized until April 2024, so Nguyen Thuy Linh will have to continue competing in international tournaments to maintain her high ranking and achieve her goal of winning a ticket to Paris.
After the 2023 ASIAD, Nguyen Thuy Linh will participate in a series of tournaments. The No. 1 Vietnamese tennis player has reached the quarterfinals of the Finland Open and then entered the second round of the Denmark Open. Ahead of Thuy Linh is the match with Chen Yu Fei at the 2023 French Open badminton tournament at 4:40 p.m. on October 25.
Thuy Linh's goal is to finish 2023 in the world's top 20 and win a ticket to the 2024 Olympics. The race for the 2024 Olympic badminton spots is called the "road to Paris", which counts points for players participating in tournaments in this system from May 1, 2023 and ending on April 28, 2024.
Previously, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Vietnam had 2 representatives participating, Nguyen Tien Minh in men's singles and Nguyen Thuy Linh in women's singles. Now, Nguyen Tien Minh has not competed internationally and the only hope for Vietnamese badminton will be Thuy Linh.
