The Ministry of Health has just announced the first case of influenza A(H9), recorded in Tien Giang. According to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), the patient infected with influenza A/H9 is a 37-year-old male residing in Tan Ly Dong commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province.
On March 10, the patient developed a fever and self-medicated, but not regularly. The patient went to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases for examination and treatment on March 16 and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia suspected to be caused by a virus.
Initial test results at the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases detected positive influenza A and had gene segments similar to influenza A virus subtype H9.
The patient's sample has been sent to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for confirmation testing.
On April 1, the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City discovered that this sample was positive for influenza A/H9. Currently, the Institute is continuing to conduct in-depth tests to determine the subgroup of this virus sample.
The patient is being treated intensively at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the results of the epidemiological investigation, the patient's residence is located in a poultry market, and poultry is also sold in front of the patient's house; there have been no reports of sick or dead poultry around the patient's family. Close contacts of the patient have been listed and monitored for their health; to date, no symptoms of respiratory infection have been detected; there have been no outbreaks of respiratory infection in the community where the patient lives.
The world has had 98 cases of influenza A (H9N2)
Worldwide, since 2015, the Western Pacific region has recorded 98 cases of influenza A (H9N2), including two deaths, both of which were patients with underlying diseases, of which 96 cases were recorded in China and 2 cases were recorded in Cambodia. Currently, there is no evidence that influenza A (H9N2) is transmitted from person to person.
In the world, from the end of 2023 until now, the situation of avian influenza in animals has been complicated, not only recording many outbreaks of avian influenza in all regions but also recording increasing transmission to mammals.
In the US, the country has also recorded scattered cases of influenza A (H5N1) transmitted from livestock in many states.
In Asia, there continue to be outbreaks of avian influenza caused by many strains of influenza A viruses such as H5N1, H5N6, H5N8, H3N2, H9N2, H10N3... Some countries bordering Vietnam continue to record human cases of avian influenza, including H5N1, H9N2.
