According to the plan, Secretary of State Blinken will visit China on June 18-19. Reuters news agency reported that in addition to working with Minister Qin Gang, the US diplomat will meet with Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Wang Yi and possibly Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss establishing open and sustainable communication channels to ensure that the strategic competition between the two countries does not fall into a spiral of conflict.

Observers expect Secretary Blinken’s visit to China to pave the way for other bilateral meetings in the coming months, including the possibility of US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visiting China. The visit is also expected to set the stage for meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden at multilateral summits later this year. Previously, in a statement issued on June 17, President Biden also expressed hope to meet President Xi Jinping in the coming months.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington ahead of the visit, Secretary of State Blinken affirmed that the visit has three main goals: establishing crisis management mechanisms, promoting the interests of the US and its allies, directly exchanging related concerns, and exploring potential areas of cooperation.
