After the fire at Pho Quang Pagoda, people in Xuan Lung Commune, Lam Thao District (Phu Tho Province) organized to clean up the 800-year-old pagoda and reinforce the national treasure.
According to the preliminary assessment of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Tho province, the fire at Pho Quang pagoda that broke out more than a week ago caused great property damage. Among them, the national treasure, the stone Buddha altar (lotus stone pedestal), had two broken corners of the lotus petals on the 5th floor (top floor) and one corner of the lotus petal on the 4th floor.
Along with that, the entire temple roof, the load-bearing column system and the door were completely burned, the worship statue system, the clay and wooden statues had broken details.
Mr. Nguyen Dac Thuy, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that the police are still in the process of investigating and finding the cause of the fire. Regarding the restoration of Pho Quang Pagoda, the department has issued a document instructing the People's Committee of Lam Thao district to prepare for the repair and restoration steps.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Chinh, Deputy Head of the Management Board of Pho Quang Pagoda, said that after the authorities completed the blockade of the scene, local people cleaned and sanitized the pagoda. As for the national treasure, the stone Buddha altar, an iron frame was erected to preserve and carefully cover it. As for the damaged statues, after restoration, they will be about 90% of their original state.
According to Mr. Chinh, in the immediate future, to ensure the safety of the remaining assets and artifacts, the pagoda management board and the commune People's Committee will build a roof to cover the entire Tam Bao pagoda; then they will study and propose a plan to renovate and embellish Pho Quang pagoda, meeting the religious needs of the people.
Earlier, at around 10am on October 23, local residents discovered that the Tam Bao temple at Pho Quang pagoda was on fire. At around 10:15am, the fire prevention, fighting and rescue police force arrived at the scene. By 11:40am, the fire was under control and extinguished. The total preliminary material damage was estimated at around 25 billion VND.
