Storm No. 1 increases 3 levels in one day, the North is about to have very heavy rain and strong winds

Today (July 16), storm No. 1 (storm Talim) increased in intensity by 3 levels, and is forecast to be the strongest storm to directly affect the North of our country in the past few years; the affected area is from Quang Ninh to Thai Binh.

On the evening of July 16, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting issued a bulletin about storm No. 1 (storm Talim) with very strong impact, causing very heavy rain and strong winds to the mainland of the Northern region.

Specifically, at 7:00 p.m. on July 16, the center of the storm was at approximately 19.5 degrees North latitude; 114.6 degrees East longitude, approximately 470 km East Southeast of Leizhou Peninsula (China). The strongest wind near the center of the storm was level 11 (103-117 km/h), gusting to level 14. Thus, in just over a day, storm No. 1 has increased by nearly 3 levels.

In the next 24 hours, the storm will move mainly in the West Northwest direction, traveling 15-20km per hour and continue to strengthen.

At 7:00 p.m. on July 17, the storm center was in the sea west of Leizhou Peninsula (China), about 330km from Mong Cai (Quang Ninh) and 390km from Hai Phong to the East Southeast. The strongest wind near the storm center reached level 12, gusting to level 15. This was the time when storm Talim reached its greatest strength.


The path of storm No. 1, directly affecting the North of our country

In the next 24 hours, the storm will continue to move in the West Northwest direction, traveling about 15-20 km/h per hour and gradually weakening.

At 7:00 p.m. on July 18, the storm center was on land in the northeastern region of the North. The strongest wind near the storm center was level 8, gusting to level 10.

And 24 hours later, the storm in the Northwest region, now weakened with winds below level 6.

Very heavy rain and strong winds on land

Due to the influence of storm No. 1, the northern sea area of ​​the North East Sea has strong winds of level 7-8, near the storm center strong winds of level 9-10, then increasing to level 11-12, gusting to level 15. The sea is rough, waves are 5-7m high.

From the afternoon and evening of July 17, the northern Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi and Co To island districts) will gradually increase in wind speed to level 6-7, then increase to level 8-9, near the storm center, level 10-12, gusting to level 15.

From the morning of July 18, the northern sea area of ​​Bac Bo Gulf has gradually increased waves, 3-5m high. In the coastal areas of Quang Ninh - Nam Dinh provinces, the waves are 2-4m high.

On land, from early morning on July 18, coastal areas from Quang Ninh to Nam Dinh will have winds gradually increasing to level 6-7, then increasing to level 8, near the storm center, winds will be level 9-10, gusting to level 13; inland areas in the Northeast, winds will be strong at level 6-7, gusting to level 9.

Coastal areas of Quang Ninh - Thai Binh provinces have storm surges of 0.5-0.8m. Risk of flooding in low-lying coastal areas, river mouths, and coastal landslides in case the storm makes landfall during high tide (evening of July 18).

In particular, from the night of July 17-20, in the Northern region, there will be heavy to very heavy rain with common rainfall of 200-400mm, locally over 500mm.

Thanh Hoa and Nghe An areas have moderate rain, heavy rain, some places have very heavy rain 100-200mm, locally over 300mm.

Heavy rains occurred after many consecutive days of thunderstorms and hot weather recently, combined with rain in the coming days, causing the risk of flash floods and landslides to increase from July 18 in the Northern region, with high risks in the provinces of Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai.

Beware of the risk of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning at the far edge of the storm's circulation.
