On May 11, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a warning that storm Mocha is at risk of developing into a super storm approaching the coast in the southeast of the country.
An emergency evacuation order has been issued for nearly 1 million residents of coastal areas.
Severe Cyclone Warning No. 1 has been issued over loudspeakers at all ports in Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. Fishing and passenger vessels have been advised to remain anchored in shelters until further notice.
While areas at high risk of natural disasters have raised red warning flags, authorities in the above cities have begun evacuation campaigns for nearly 1 million people ahead of the storm's landfall.
Previously, on May 10, Director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department Md Azizur Rahman predicted that cyclone Mocha would sweep across the southeastern coastal area of Bangladesh and the northern coast of Myanmar on May 14.
He said the country's army, navy and coast guard were ready to deploy rescue forces as Typhoon Mocha was likely to strengthen into a super typhoon.
Powerful storms kill hundreds of people every year in Bangladesh.
