Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 and boarded a helicopter to leave the country for a 'safe haven', local media reported.

According to Bangladesh media, Sheikh Hasina and her sister boarded a military helicopter to fly to India.

Protests have been causing turmoil in Bangladesh recently. On August 4 alone, 95 people, including 14 police officers, were killed and hundreds injured in clashes between police and protesters in the capital Dhaka.

Sky News (UK) reported that 6 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters in the Dhaka Medical College and Jatrabari areas on August 5.

Protests began in July as students demanded changes to job quotas in state agencies.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Home Affairs has declared an indefinite nationwide curfew, starting from 6:00 p.m. on August 4 local time (7:00 p.m. the same day Vietnam time).

On August 4, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed concern over the recent violence in Bangladesh and called for dialogue between the government and protesters.
