Bangladesh reports first death from human papillomavirus (HMPV).
Female patient Sanjida Akhter died at around 6pm on January 15 local time at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in the capital Dhakak where she had been treated since January 12.
Hospital representatives said the patient had a number of underlying conditions including obesity, kidney problems and lung complications. The patient had no history of traveling abroad.
The death comes days after Bangladesh reported its first HMPV case this season.
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), test results showed that the patient tested positive for klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria that cause pneumonia.
HMPV was first detected in Bangladesh in 2017 and has since been prevalent during winter.
