After a month-long investigation, Australian police carried out a raid and seized drugs shipped from an unidentified South American country worth up to $494 million.
Australian police announced on December 2 that they had seized a record 2.3 tonnes of cocaine and arrested 13 people in a raid on a broken-down fishing vessel off the coast of Queensland, northeastern Australia.
Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay said the arrests on November 30 and December 1 followed a month-long investigation after police received information about plans to transport tonnes of cocaine.
Investigators said the drugs, which were shipped from an unspecified South American country, were worth 760 million Australian dollars ($494 million) and would be worth 11.7 million street deals if they had reached Australia.
Police said the first boat the smugglers were on broke down and drifted hundreds of miles off shore in international waters. A second boat also broke down on November 30, leaving the suspects stranded at sea for hours until police raided the fishing boat and seized the drugs.
Those arrested, including those on board the boat and those waiting to receive the cocaine on shore, were all Australian citizens, including two under the age of 18. The maximum penalty for these people is life imprisonment.
