Currently, up to 4/5 of the submarine cables exploited by Vietnamese network operators are faulty.

An Internet service provider (ISP) in Vietnam said that since noon on January 28, the Intra Asia (IA, also known as Lien A) submarine cable has had a problem.

The cause was determined to be a broken cable located about 130km from the Singapore landing station of the cable line. The incident caused the loss of all international connection capacity from Vietnam to Singapore of this cable line.

Put into operation since November 2009, Lien A is one of five submarine optical cable lines that account for the majority of Internet connection capacity from Vietnam to international destinations, along with four other lines including Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), Asia America Gateway (AAG), AAE-1 (Asia - Africa - Euro 1) and SMW3 (also known as SEA - ME - WE3).

With a total length of 6,800 km, the Pan-Asia submarine cable connects Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan. Pan-Asia is considered an important optical cable route to transfer traffic to America and Europe for customers in Vietnam and the region.

With the recent Lien A cable failure, currently, 4/5 of the submarine cables operated by Vietnamese network operators are faulty.

Specifically, on December 26, 2022 and January 21, 2023 (ie 30th of Tet), the APG cable line had problems on 2 segments S6 near Hong Kong (China) and S9 connecting to Singapore.

With AAE-1, this submarine cable encountered a problem at the end of November 2022 on branches S1H.1 towards Hong Kong (China) and S1H.3 towards Singapore. While the error on the branch connecting to Singapore was fixed on January 14, 2023, the problem on the cable branch connecting to Hong Kong (China) has not been fixed yet.

As for AAG, last year, this cable line had problems many times on both connections to Singapore and Hong Kong (China).

With the Singapore cable direction, AAG had problems on branches S1B, S1D and a power failure at the TungKu landing station (Brunei); with the Hong Kong (China) connection direction, AAG had problems on branches S1H and S1I.

According to information from the carriers, among these errors, only the problem on the S1H branch has completed repair.
