Electric vehicle battery company CATL has just introduced a new battery that can provide a travel distance of 1,000 km and the ability to quickly charge for 600 km in 10 minutes.
Recently at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, the world's leading electric vehicle battery company CATL from China introduced the new Shenxing Plus battery model with many improvements in performance and charging speed.
According to the manufacturer, the new battery uses the most modern lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) material technology in the electric car industry today, combined with a 3D honeycomb material structure at the anode exclusively developed by CATL to increase energy density.
Meanwhile, at the negative pole, the battery pack is equipped with granular hierarchical technology that both improves energy density and increases battery life. In addition, the shell of the Shenxing Plus battery pack is monolithic, optimizing the space inside the battery, increasing capacity without affecting the size or weight of the battery.
CATL revealed that the Shenxing Plus battery pack has an energy density of 205 Wh/g, providing a maximum operating range of up to 1,000 km according to Chinese testing standards. It comes with super-fast charging technology that allows electric vehicles to travel up to 600 km after only 10 minutes of charging, equivalent to 1 km/1 second of charging.
CATL's new battery technology is considered a new step forward in the field of electric vehicle battery production in particular and the electric vehicle industry in general. With an energy density comparable to Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries but at a lower cost, Shenxing Plus batteries could be the key to helping Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers continue to dominate the "war" of product price reduction.
In addition, CATL also said that the charging efficiency of Shenxing Plus is significantly improved even in extreme weather conditions. Specifically, this battery pack can increase charging efficiency by 50% at temperatures as low as -20°C. This will help overcome the disadvantage of electric vehicles, which is the shortened distance traveled on a single charge in cold weather.
CATL has not yet announced a specific timeline for electric vehicles using the new battery technology to be launched on the market. However, the company revealed that it can complete the production of a Shenxing Plus battery pack in just 1 second at the factory, showing that the possibility of mass production is within reach.
CATL is known as the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer. The company currently supplies batteries to most of the world's automakers, including General Motors, Volkswagen, BMW, Tesla, and VinFast.
