Opposite Hai Duong parish church on Tran Hung Dao street (Hai Duong city) there is an old coffee shop over 30 years old famous for its egg coffee that captivates many people.
Mrs. Yen's coffee shop opposite Hai Duong church is usually crowded from early morning.
Delicious food to remember
This coffee shop has a sign saying "Yen Ha Cafe" but is often called by the familiar name of Mrs. Yen's shop or "the fat guy's" shop. It is called that because the current owner is Mrs. Pham Thi Hai Yen (73 years old) and "the fat guy" is Mrs. Yen's son who also follows in his parents' footsteps.
There are many shops selling egg coffee in Hai Duong City, but no one has achieved the same flavor as Mrs. Yen's because of her own secret. Mrs. Yen beats eggs with a blender and steams them until they boil slightly, while the coffee and cocoa are also heated and mixed together to form a cup of coffee and egg cocoa.
When pouring coffee in, the egg cream pushed to the mouth of the cup must roll into a wave towards the inside of the cup to be considered successful.
The egg coffee here has the rich aroma of whipped eggs, condensed milk, and a slightly bitter taste, the aroma of coffee. In particular, when pouring coffee into the cup, the coffee pushes the egg cream to the mouth of the cup, rolling into waves towards the inside of the cup, even if the cup is full, it is difficult to spill out when carrying or moving. Many women who come to Mrs. Yen's shop like to drink egg cocoa because of its slightly bitter taste, easier to drink than egg coffee. For those who cannot drink coffee, egg cocoa is the perfect choice.
Mrs. Yen's shop is usually open from 4:30 to 21:00 every day, and is always crowded with customers. To make a cup of egg coffee and egg cocoa that is so delicious and attractive to customers, Mrs. Yen is meticulous from the beginning of choosing the input ingredients. She imports cocoa from abroad, coffee from the garden in Buon Me Thuot and then roasts and grinds it herself, the eggs are from Thanh Ha chicken eggs and she only uses the yolks to whip the cream so it doesn't have a fishy smell.
Each cup of coffee and egg cocoa at Mrs. Yen's house costs from 25,000 to 30,000 VND.
One special thing that makes people appreciate Mrs. Yen’s egg coffee even more is that she only sells it in the cold season. When the weather is not cold, Mrs. Yen does not make even one cup of egg coffee because the room temperature is high, so this dish will not be delicious. Many people who come from far away to Mrs. Yen but it is not the cold season do not have the opportunity to enjoy this drink. If you have the opportunity to visit here in the winter, when the weather is cold and sip a cup of hot, fragrant egg coffee while admiring the Hai Duong church, it is truly a wonderful experience that people will remember forever.
Many customers have been drinking at Ms. Yen's for decades. During Tet, she gives each of them a bottle of coffee to drink on days when she is not selling.
Coffee shop with many memories
30 years have passed, life has changed a lot but Mrs. Yen's shop is still there, still intact as before. The shop has 2 frontages right at the beginning of Nha Tho street and on Tran Hung Dao street but is modest, old as if shrinking among the modern shops around it trying to expand. No noise, no big signs, no following trends but the shop still retains customers all these years because it not only sells cups of coffee, this place also preserves many memories of both sellers and buyers.
Ms. Nguyen Thi To Uyen (born in 1976) in Nam Sach district has been drinking egg coffee here since her student days. Now, after graduating and working in the district for several decades, Ms. Uyen still remembers the taste of that day. “Every time I go to Hai Duong city, I stop by the shop to drink egg cocoa. After several decades, the taste and space of the shop have not changed, bringing back beautiful memories,” Ms. Uyen shared while holding a cup of hot egg cocoa in her hand.
Ms. Yen is 73 years old this year but is still agile working at the coffee shop and loves this place very much.
A few days before Tet, someone from Ho Chi Minh City came to Mrs. Yen's shop in the North and asked her to make him a cup of egg coffee because he was craving it and missing it so much. Mrs. Yen also got up at 1am to make black coffee to give to customers on Tet holiday. Her hands were black from making hundreds of bottles of pure coffee. For Mrs. Yen, this place is not only a place to earn a living but also a place that holds many memories of her with her late husband.
The recipe for making egg coffee in her family was also thanks to her husband who was in the army and drank a cup of egg coffee in Hai Phong that was so delicious that he kept wondering why people could make it like that. When he returned home, her husband researched, learned, and experimented for a long time before coming up with the recipe as it is now.
Ms. Yen's son continues the family business
Back then, Ms. Yen sold iced tea to earn money after work, and gradually bought a small storefront at her current location. Together, she and her husband built up the brand and then settled down. Three years ago, her husband suddenly passed away due to a stroke, leaving Ms. Yen with a lot of longing. Now, Ms. Yen only hopes that the next generation will do well, keep the shop for a long time and the drinks at her house will still be loved by many people like now.
