V.League will have more overseas Vietnamese players

The VFF Executive Committee of the 9th term has agreed to increase the number of foreign players of Vietnamese origin registered to compete in the V.League. Previously, teams in the national professional and non-professional systems were allowed to register 1 player in the above category.

But from the 2024/2025 season, each team can register up to 2 players. The number of foreign players of Vietnamese origin will also be increased for tournaments such as futsal and the national women's championship.

According to Section 4, Article 2, Chapter I, Law on Vietnamese Nationality: "Vietnamese origin abroad" is a person who has renounced Vietnamese nationality to acquire foreign nationality, a person whose biological father, biological mother, paternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather or maternal grandmother is a person with Vietnamese nationality.

Thus, the opportunity for Vietnamese players to return to their homeland to compete is much greater than before. In the past, there were many cases where Vietnamese players were interested in V-League clubs but they could not play because they were considered foreign players.

Currently, the Vietnam Football Federation is still actively inviting players with Vietnamese blood to try their hand at many levels of the national team. However, in 2024, only Ho Huu Hung (Czech Republic) will return to play for the Vietnam U19 team. Unfortunately, he has not been able to adapt to the new environment, so he missed the Southeast Asian U19 tournament taking place in Indonesia.

In the long run, being able to play in his home country makes it easier for players of Vietnamese origin to obtain citizenship, paving the way for them to contribute to the Vietnamese national team. Previously, Nguyen Filip had a trial at Thanh Hoa Club, but he was considered a foreign player and had to give up his place to South American strikers.

In the coming time, some other players of Vietnamese origin will continue to return to the country and the most expected one is Jason Pendant Quang Vinh. V.League will be better in quality if there are names of enough class to compete with players trained in the country.
