There are no details yet on what caused the breakup of Russia's RESURS-P1 Earth observation satellite, which was due to stop operating in 2022.

Space tracking company LeoLabs said US radars detected the satellite releasing a cloud of debris in low Earth orbit on the night of June 26-27.

US Space Command (USSPACECOM) sees no immediate threat and continues to conduct regular comprehensive assessments to support the safety and sustainability of the space domain.
