On the afternoon of September 19, the People's Court of Hai Duong province held the first instance trial of Do Ngoc Khanh (born January 2, 2005, residing in Phuc Thanh commune, Kim Thanh) for murder and robbery.
According to the indictment of the Hai Duong Provincial People's Procuracy, Khanh was a 12th grade student at the time of the crime. Khanh borrowed about 5 million VND from some classmates. To have money to pay off the debt, on the evening of January 12, 2023, Khanh came up with the idea of going around Phu Thai town, if he saw any careless houses, he would steal property.
At around 10 p.m. the same day, while walking to the road in Dong Van residential area near 20/9 Square towards An Thanh riverbank, Phu Thai town, Khanh discovered someone fishing on the riverbank. Khanh had the idea of killing the fisherman to take possession of his property.
Khanh took a brick from the fence and ran towards the riverbank. Seeing Mr. D.VT (born in 1985, residing in Phu Thai town) sitting fishing, facing the An Thanh river, with a motorbike nearby, Khanh hid behind the motorbike and observed for about 5 minutes. Mr. T. did not notice Khanh so he approached and used a brick to hit the top of Mr. T.'s head, causing him to fall unconscious on the riverbank. Khanh threw the brick into the river and ran away to the garbage dump. Seeing a knife on the side of the road, Khanh had the idea of continuing to use the knife to cut Mr. T.'s throat to death to avoid being discovered.
Khanh went over and saw Mr. T. sitting on the embankment. Khanh immediately held his head down, took a knife and slashed his neck several times. Mr. T. died at the scene due to acute blood loss. Khanh threw the knife and some of Mr. T.'s belongings into the river, then threw Mr. T.'s body into the water.
When he got home, Khanh remembered that Mr. T's motorbike was still on the sidewalk, so he returned to the scene and pushed the motorbike into the river to destroy the evidence.
At about 9:40 p.m. on January 13, 2023, Khanh went to the Criminal Police Department of Hai Duong Provincial Police to surrender.
The jury sentenced defendant Do Ngoc Khanh to death for murder and four years in prison for robbery. The total sentence is death.
