Commenting on weather patterns from April to September 2024, Head of the Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Nguyen Van Huong said that from April to June 2024, the El Nino phenomenon will gradually weaken and turn to a neutral state with a probability of 75-80%. Storms and tropical depressions are unlikely to appear in the East Sea.

From July to September 2024, ENSO (two phenomena El Nino and La Nina and related to the oscillation of air pressure between the two coasts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean and the Western Pacific Ocean - Eastern Indian Ocean) is likely to transition to La Nina state (the phenomenon of the surface sea water layer in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean cooling abnormally) with a probability of 55-65%.

According to Head of Department Nguyen Van Huong, from April 2024, cold air will be weak and there is less chance of severe cold. Light rain and drizzle will also gradually decrease and will only occur for a few days in the coastal areas of the Northeast. However, there is a possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind across the country, especially during cold air waves affecting our country during the transitional period of April and May 2024.

From April to May 2024, the average temperature nationwide will generally be 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years, and higher in some places. June 2024 will be 0.5-1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.

Regarding the hot weather, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong said that the hot weather occurred early in the Northwestern and Central regions. In the second half of March, the hot weather appeared in the Northwestern region and the western mountainous areas of the North Central region. After that, the hot weather increased in intensity and gradually spread to other areas of the North.

From April to June 2024, heat waves will occur in the North Central and South Central regions; in the South, heat waves will continue in the Eastern region and will gradually expand to the Western region; the Central region is likely to experience prolonged drought during this period. In the Central Highlands and South, drought conditions will continue in April 2024.

Total rainfall in the Northern region is generally at a level approximately equal to the average of many years in the same period. The total rainfall in the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien - Hue is generally lower than the average of many years by 15-30mm. The provinces and cities from Da Nang to Binh Thuan are deficient by 20-40mm. By May 2024, the total rainfall in the Central region is deficient by 10-30%.

In April 2024, the Central Highlands and the South will have total rainfall 30-60mm lower than the average of many years. In May 2024, the deficit compared to the average of many years will be about 15-30%. In June 2024, it will generally be at a level approximately equal to the average of many years in the same period.

Regarding information on hydrometeorological phenomena from July to September 2024, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong said that during the above period, storms and tropical depressions are likely to appear about 4-6 times in the East Sea and about 1-2 times affecting the mainland of our country.

The average temperature across the country is generally 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years. Heat waves and severe heat waves in the North and Central regions are likely to occur more than the average of many years in July-August 2024, so be on guard for particularly severe heat waves. Heat waves tend to decrease gradually from the second half of August in the North and from September in the Central region. The Central region is likely to experience drought in July-August 2024.

In the face of the above dangerous weather patterns, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong warned that the increasing heat wave will affect daily life as well as all outdoor activities. Especially in May-June 2024, the heat wave may become more severe. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail during the transitional season may negatively affect production and daily life of communities in affected areas. In addition, storms, tropical depressions, and the Southwest monsoon are likely to cause strong winds and large waves that will affect activities in the East Sea.

To proactively respond, people need to regularly monitor forecast and warning information on the website of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting at nchmf.gov.vn, provincial, municipal and regional Hydro-Meteorological Stations and regularly update the latest hydro-meteorological forecast information on the official mass media of the Central and local levels.
