Toyota models using the Daihatsu platform have front shock absorber nuts that are not tightened properly, at risk of falling off while the vehicle is in operation.

Toyota Vietnam (TMV) has just announced a recall of a series of models such as Avanza, Veloz, Yaris Cross with a total of 25,971 units. These vehicles have nuts installed on the front shock absorbers that are not tightened enough due to a design problem. During use, the shock absorber nuts may loosen and cause unusual noise. The shock absorber nuts may even fall off, affecting the vehicle's operation and safety.

The affected Toyota Avanza and Veloz models were manufactured between January 7 and October 28, 2022 at the company's factory in Indonesia. These two models are also assembled domestically, with the production period being November 14, 2022 to August 14, 2023. The total number of Avanza and Veloz recalled is 25,523 vehicles.

The Yaris Cross model subject to recall is 448 units. These vehicles were produced at the factory in Indonesia between June 2 and August 30, 2023.

Toyota Vietnam has not recorded any accidents related to this problem. Some dealers said that during the vehicle maintenance process, technicians checked the front suspension system and it was still guaranteed.

This recall by TMV is not related to the safety test cheating scandal of its subsidiary Daihatsu. Toyota Group confirmed that only one model in Vietnam is affected by this scandal, the Avanza MT, related to emissions, not safety. TMV has stopped delivering the Avanza MT to dealers since December 20, 2023.

In addition to recalling the above vehicle models, TMV also announced that 6,368 Avanza, Veloz, and Raize vehicles manufactured at the Indonesian factory (period 12/9 - 7/12/2022) have brake pads at risk of failure earlier than originally designed. The cause lies in the front fork pin dust cover being damaged during the assembly process. This allows dust and water to enter the dust cover, causing the brake pads to rust and wear.

All of the above vehicles will be received by authorized Toyota dealers and repaired free of charge. The recall program begins January 19 and will continue until repairs are completed.

In Vietnam, Toyota sells the Avanza, Veloz, Raize, and Yaris Cross models with platforms used by its subsidiary Daihatsu (DNGA). The current generation Avanza and Veloz will be sold in Vietnam in March 2022, but by the end of this year, the company will switch to domestic assembly.
