In a statement, United Nations (UN) spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Guterres was "satisfied with the work of Mr. Volker Perthes and reaffirmed his full confidence in the role of the UN Special Envoy."

Neither the Sudanese military nor the UN have released an official copy of General Burhan's letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Last week, General Burhan also fired the commander of the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Daglo, from his position as deputy chairman of the transitional military council.

On May 26, the Sudanese Ministry of Defense called on retired and demobilized soldiers to go to the nearest military base to be equipped with weapons for self-defense and to protect their loved ones and families.

Several protests have taken place in many places in Sudan, attended by thousands of supporters of the country's military, accusing UN Special Envoy Volker Perthes of abetting "foreign interference" and demanding his dismissal.

Mr. Perthes is currently in New York City (USA) to attend a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Sudan.

There is no word yet on when Mr Perthes will return to Sudan, as the country has not issued visas to foreigners since mid-April, when clashes between the army and RSF forces broke out.

The conflict in Sudan has displaced more than 1.36 million people, with nearly 320,000 fleeing to neighboring countries, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. Sudan’s health ministry said at least 730 people had died, although the actual figure could be much higher. Those who remain in Khartoum are suffering from a lack of electricity and running water, and no health care.
