The 15th Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit opened on May 4 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center in the Gambian capital Banjul, with the theme “Strengthening Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development.”

In his opening remarks, President Adama Barrow stressed that the two-day conference was being held in the context of the complicated conflict situation in the Gaza Strip, which poses a serious challenge to stability and peace in the world. President Barrow called on the OIC to “chart a new path towards peace and reconciliation” on this issue.

Also speaking at the opening session, OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha denounced the Israeli military attacks in the Gaza Strip and affirmed the OIC's support and commitment to the Palestinian people. Established in 1969, the OIC currently has 57 member states.

Speaking at the conference, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated the world's and Arab countries' opposition to any plan to relocate Palestinians from their land with the aim of eliminating the Palestinian cause.

Mr Shoukry called for a “firm stance” against “illusions” about the annihilation of the Palestinian cause. The head of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that the Palestinians, as well as the Muslim, Arab and other peoples of the free world, have not and will not accept the forced departure of the Palestinians from their occupied territories, as this violates international conventions.

Mr. Shoukry stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is an indispensable solution to achieve lasting and just peace as well as ensure stability in the Middle East.

The Gaza Health Ministry said on May 4 that since October 7, 2023, the Israel-Hamas conflict has claimed the lives of more than 34,600 Palestinians and injured more than 77,900.

Israel's relentless attacks have caused major damage to Gaza's medical infrastructure and forced most of its population to flee to the city of Rafah on the border with Egypt.
