Google Maps is a popular route finding application used by many people. However, this application also causes many users to have funny and sad situations.

Pham Xuan Quy (born in 1988, from Dong Nai), is currently a tour guide and freelance photographer. Loving to travel and explore new lands, the Dong Nai boy used Google Maps when visiting many provinces and cities in the S-shaped strip of land.

Mr. Pham Xuan Quy had many memorable experiences using Google Maps in the northern mountainous provinces.

Talking about his most memorable experience using Google Maps, he shared: “I remember once going to Pe Si Ngai village in Sin Ho district, Lai Chau province. At first, I asked the locals for directions to the village, they were very helpful and reminded me many times that there was a very bad road, so don’t go there. I had to use Google Maps to find another way to go.

At first, the road was beautiful and the scenery was beautiful, but the further I went, the narrower, muddier, and bumpier the road became. But at that time, Google Maps showed that there was only 1km left, so I tried to continue.

But the road was getting narrower, with a cliff on one side and a cliff on the other, Mr. Quy could not turn the car around, while the road became increasingly muddy, reaching a point where the car could not get out of the mud.

“At that time, I was completely helpless because even though I had stopped many times and then turned on the gas to go forward, it still didn’t work. At that time, I didn’t know what to do, but luckily I met two Mong people passing by on their way to the fields, and I asked them to help me push the bike back to a place where I could turn around. And it was very difficult to turn the bike around,” said Mr. Quy.

After thanking the two people for helping him, he was further explained that this road was impassable and was only for cattle.

The Southern guy shared: “Using Google Maps in the highlands is extremely difficult because there are sections where phone signal is lost, there are small trails but Google still guides me there, if I am unlucky enough to encounter extremely bad roads, it is very dangerous.”

When traveling on difficult roads in the highlands, Mr. Quy often receives help from local people, mostly Mong people. “They are very enthusiastic and hospitable. Many times, I received help and support from Mong people when I encountered bad roads. To be frank, the roads were extremely bad. I could never get through them alone, and I couldn’t even turn around,” the Dong Nai boy confided.

Sharing his experience of traveling on mountain passes in the highlands, especially the roads leading to villages, Mr. Quy said that in addition to following Google Maps, tourists should ask the locals wherever they go. If they say they can go there with certainty, then it's okay. If they hesitate for a moment and then say they can go and go well, then you should reconsider and ask one or two other people if you meet them. In case they say the road is bad and cannot be traveled, quickly change to another route.

Having also encountered problems with Google Maps, Tran Ngo Le Ha (19 years old, Phu Yen), currently a student at the University of Finance - Marketing (Ho Chi Minh City), shared: "Recently, I took advantage of the long Tet holiday, and the weather in Phu Yen was beautiful, so I decided to go to Cu Lao Mai Nha in Tuy An district to visit and take pictures."

Le Ha felt quite sorry for not being able to go to Cu Lao Mai Nha, but she also discovered a new place.

Le Ha and her companion chose to travel by motorbike to the boat dock to go to Cu Lao Mai Nha island. Because they were not familiar with the roads in Tuy An district, the two young people used Google Maps.

Ha shared: “It was quite a long way from home to Tuy An district, but when we arrived, I was quite surprised because this was not a boat dock. Google Maps said we had arrived at the location, but in front of us was a slope. Although a bit disappointed, we did not choose to go back or find our way to the boat dock, but instead wandered around to visit. Finally, we found a small fishing village by the sea, so we decided to explore there.”

Le Ha said the beach here is very wild, with only a few people fishing and a small family camping. According to her, this is a very suitable place for overnight camping. This place is very peaceful, not crowded, the sound of the waves is also gentle, moreover, this place also has houses nearby so it is quite safe. So although it is quite a pity that we could not go to Cu Lao Mai Nha, we are also happy to discover a new place and have beautiful pictures.

From this experience, Le Ha learned that she should not only look at Google Maps' suggestions but also carefully research information and join travel review groups to better update the situation. In addition, she believes that when using Google Maps, choosing the satellite map type will help visualize her location more easily.
