Google Maps has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The change applies to users in the United States, while for users in Mexico, the location is still called Gulf of Mexico, while the location has both names for users outside of those two countries.
Google changed the name of the location after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America right after his inauguration on January 20.
This information was later updated in the US Geographic Names Information System and now Google Maps.
President Donald Trump signed a proclamation declaring February 9 as "Gulf of America Day" as he flew over the gulf to attend the Super Bowl that same day.
The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world, bordering the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. Experts emphasize that President Trump's name change only applies within the United States and other countries do not have to recognize and call it that.
