Electric carmaker Tesla will recall 1.68 million vehicles in China to update software to ensure the device warns drivers when the trunk is not closed.
The notice was issued by China's State Administration for Market Regulation on August 7. It also stated that vehicles with faulty trunk locks will be repaired free of charge. The recall affects certain imported Model S and Model X vehicles and domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between October 15, 2020 and July 17, 2024.
According to the recall notice, an unlocked trunk lid could open while the vehicle is in motion, obstructing the driver’s view. The notice does not say whether this has happened to any Tesla vehicles.
China is a major market and manufacturing base for Tesla, as well as a growing source of competition from Chinese electric vehicle makers. Tesla reported a sharp drop in second-quarter net income in July, as sales fell despite price cuts and low financing rates.
