Electric car maker Tesla announced it will recall more than 1.8 million vehicles due to a hood problem that increases the risk of accidents.
Elon Musk’s company is recalling certain Model 3 (2021-2024), Model S, Model X and Model Y (2020-2024) vehicles because the hood latch may not detect an open hood after it has been opened. An open hood could open while the vehicle is moving, obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a crash.
The company said it has not received any reports of accidents, injuries or deaths related to the issue to date.
Tesla began investigating customer complaints about the issue in Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China on March 25. By mid-April, the automaker determined that the issue affecting vehicles in China was due to the hood latch.
Tesla continued to investigate and found that the rate of vehicles with the above defect in China was higher than in Europe and North America, but it is not clear why this difference exists. As of July 20, the company has identified 3 customers reporting and claiming warranty in the US related to the hood.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tesla has issued a free software update to address the issue. Letters to affected owners are expected to be sent by September 22.
Last month, Tesla recalled its new Cybertruck pickup truck due to safety concerns, the fourth recall of the vehicle in the US since its launch on November 30, 2023.
