August 2024 was the hottest month in Spain's history since records began, with an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
In a post on X on the evening of September 2, the meteorological agency AEMET said that last August was the warmest month on record. The average temperature was about 0.2 times higher than the Augusts of 2003 and 2023, which were the warmest Augusts in the country.
Based on temperatures recorded so far this year, 2024 could be Spain's warmest year since records began, on par with the average temperature of 2022. So far, 2022 is the hottest year on record, with an average temperature of 15.7 degrees Celsius.
Last August, the EU's climate monitoring agency, Copernicus Climate Change Service, assessed the "increasing likelihood" that 2024 will be the hottest year on record worldwide.
This summer, many places around the world have also reported record temperatures, including Japan and parts of China. Parts of China recorded their hottest August on record, while Japanese officials declared this year the hottest summer since records began.
