In a statement on its website, the Greek National Observatory said the average temperature in the country from 1960 to 2024 has increased by 2.5 degrees Celsius. According to the observatory, three of the four Julys with the highest temperatures in the past 80 years have been recorded in the past four years. According to preliminary data, July 2024 will be the hottest July in Greek history, with temperatures 0.3 degrees Celsius higher than the previous record set in July 2012.

The European Union's (EU) Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) recorded July 21 as the hottest day ever globally, with an average global surface air temperature of 17.09 degrees Celsius. However, the very next day, the record was broken, when the temperature increased by 0.6 degrees Celsius, to 17.15 degrees Celsius.
