New Xiaomi Smartphone Takes Just 9 Minutes to Fully Charge

Chinese electronics company Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi has surprised many people by claiming that its new smartphone model can fully charge itself in just 9 minutes.

Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi is primarily known for making affordable devices with the right features to sell in large numbers in emerging markets like India and China.

The company's Note line of smartphones has done well in these markets and is regularly among the best-selling phones.

According to Gadgets 360, one of the reasons for the widespread popularity of Redmi devices in these countries is the value they offer for their price. Most of the devices from Redmi’s mid-range lineup have good camera quality, come with fast enough processors, and receive regular software updates. In some regions, these mid-range smartphones even outperform expensive flagship smartphones.

A prime example of this is charging speeds. While the latest iPhones only top out at 20W, the fastest Samsung smartphones top out at 45W, and even a Redmi phone that launched two years ago features 30W fast charging.

The fastest charging smartphone battle reached its peak in 2021 when Xiaomi first announced the Redmi 11T Pro with 120W fast charging. Xiaomi's arch-rival OPPO improved that record a few months later when it announced the 150w SuperVOOC charging standard - which eventually made its way to the international variants of the OnePlus 10T.

These ultra-fast charging speeds allow companies to make incredible claims about the fast charging capabilities of their products. For example, OPPO’s sister brand OnePlus claims that its OnePlus 10T smartphone can be fully charged in 19 minutes using a 150W fast charger. Determined to reclaim the fast charging crown, Xiaomi recently announced a new phone that supports up to 210W charging speeds – the Redmi Note 12 Discover Edition.

Redmi Note 12 Discover Edition is a mid-range phone powered by the MediaTek Dimensty 1080 chip. The highlight of the Discover Edition is its 4300 mAh battery that can charge from 0% to 100% in just 9 minutes using a 210W charger. Xiaomi had to make some changes to the phone's design to enable this feature.

First, the phone uses three different 100W charging chips to handle the charging process and allow for optimal heat dissipation. Xiaomi has also used a 10C dual-cell battery with an improved structure and a new manufacturing process. The 210W charger that comes with the phone uses a dual GaN (Gali Nitride) design to improve energy density. Even the charging cable has been revised to a 10.5A specification for a 75% increase in current carrying capacity.

In addition to the blazing charging speed, the Redmi Note 12's camera specs are also impressive. This is the first phone to use Samsung's 200MP HPX image sensor. It can shoot photos at 12.5MP, 50MP, and 200MP resolutions. The main lens also supports OIS (Optical Image Stabilization).

In addition to the 200MP main sensor, the Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition also has an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 12MP selfie camera. The display is 6.67 inches, FullHD with a 120Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi has confirmed that the Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition will go on sale in China from October 30 for $330 (VND 8.2 million).
