Students avoid losing money due to online tutor recruitment scams

April 30, 2021 19:43

Many online tutoring sites post information about recruiting tutors, but after students exchange and pay fees online, the money is lost and the class does not receive any tutoring.

Attending career fairs organized by universities is one of the safe ways to find a job.

Provide account number and require students to pay 30-35% fee... before contacting parents to receive tutoring class. After the money is transferred, the recruiter's social media account immediately blocks student messages.

Money lost, class no more

NTAT, a student at Ton Duc Thang University, said that because he trusted the tutor recruitment group with nearly 50,000 members, when he saw information about a class suitable for his major, he proactively texted to accept the class.

After about 15 minutes of discussion, the recruiter said that I would teach two sessions a week, two hours each session, with a tuition fee of 1.5 million VND/month and a transfer fee of 300,000 VND.

"Seeing the detailed information about the class, I transferred money to the account holder and waited for the day to receive the class. Unexpectedly, when I arrived at the address provided on Nguyen Kiem Street, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, it was an abandoned house. I called the parents and the class transferee, both of whom were "subscribers....", only then did I realize I had been scammed" - T. said.

Similar to the above case, TT, a student at the College of Foreign Economic Relations, said that because he wanted to find a part-time job to cover part of his living expenses, he joined a tutoring group in Ho Chi Minh City. Seeing information about transferring a reporting class for 2nd graders with a salary of 1.5 million VND/month, with a 30% class acceptance fee, he immediately accepted.

"The person who transferred the class took a photo of my ID and promised to be reputable, so I felt secure and transferred the fee to them. On the day of the class, I drove more than ten kilometers but still couldn't find the address. When I called the parents, the phone number was wrong. When I opened my phone to contact the person who transferred the class, the account was blocked," T. said.

After realizing that he had been scammed, T. went to the tutoring group and shared the incident. Unexpectedly, more than 10 friends were also scammed by the same account owner with the same information and fees. The scammers used money transfer messages from one person to send to another to gain trust.

Should contact reputable centers

Mr. Le Nguyen Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Student Support Center said: "Currently, the center is introducing tutoring jobs for students at a price of 150,000 - 200,000 VND/hour.

Before taking up a job, students will be equipped with the necessary professional skills to both meet the recruitment needs of business units and ensure the rights of students when collaborating with units. Recruitment requirements before being posted on the center's software have been pre-verified, are reliable and free of charge, so students can feel secure in registering for work."

Mr. Vo Binh Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Center for Career Counseling and Human Resource Development at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said: "One of the reasons students are deceived is because they go through unreliable job introduction centers. The target of these centers are students with no experience, who want to find light part-time jobs with high salaries.

Therefore, to have a safe part-time job, students should contact reputable job centers such as job centers under universities, city job centers and Ho Chi Minh City Student Support Center...".

Mr. Nguyen also said that the center always has short-term courses to improve students' skills when looking for jobs.

In addition, the center regularly receives and posts recruitment information from agencies, organizations, units and businesses on the school's information page so that students can grasp and choose suitable jobs, and at the same time organizes job fairs to create a bridge between students and recruiting units...

Mr. Dang Ba Ngoan, Deputy Head of Corporate Relations Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education:

Beware of multi-level marketing and job broker scams

Students often encounter pyramid schemes and scams from employment agencies and attractive classified ads. When students arrive, they will have to pay in advance a fee called a uniform deposit and insurance fee. When they work enough months, they will receive this deposit back.

In addition, scams that trick students into working online, without having to spend time commuting but still earning a stable income, are also very common.

The school has coordinated with the Youth Union and functional departments to organize specialized training sessions on skills to prevent temptation, fraud, and social evils to help students gain knowledge and skills to prevent fraud.
