Roof collapse at food court in Peru leaves nearly 80 dead and injured

At least three people have died and 74 others have been injured after the roof of the Real Plaza food court collapsed in Trujillo, Peru. Rescuers and police are still searching for people trapped in the rubble.

On the morning of February 22 (Hanoi time), at least 3 people were killed and 74 others were injured after the roof of the Real Plaza food court collapsed in Trujillo, Peru's third largest city, about 500km north of the capital Lima.

“The three people killed were two men and a woman,” Fire Department Commander Gelqui Gomez said on television.

According to local health officials, 10 children were among the injured. In addition, 11 people were seriously injured.

Local media reported that dozens of families were in the mall's food court when the incident occurred.

More than 100 rescuers and police are still searching for people trapped in the rubble.

Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivanez estimated the area of ​​the collapsed roof at 700-800 square meters. He said a hydraulic crane would be needed to lift the remaining part of the roof to continue rescue operations for those who may be trapped.
