On March 6, the Bulgarian Parliament approved the resignation of Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov, one day after the head of government submitted it to the legislature.
In Eastern Europe, 216 members of Bulgaria's 240-seat parliament voted unanimously for Prime Minister Denkov's resignation. However, according to the Bulgarian constitution, the government led by Denkov will continue to function until a new cabinet is elected.
Earlier, the "We continue to change" - "Democratic Bulgaria" (PP-DB) coalition, the second largest coalition in the parliament with 63 seats, appointed Mr. Denkov to the position of prime minister.
Prime Minister Denkov's resignation is to implement the power-sharing agreement reached in June 2023 between the PP-DB coalition and the "Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria" (GERB-UDF) bloc, which holds 69 seats in the National Assembly.
According to Mr. Denkov, he will serve as prime minister for the first nine months, after which Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel, a representative of GERB-UDF, will take over.
Negotiations between GERB-|UDF and PP-DB regarding the rotation of this position are currently underway.
