A day after Donald Trump is sworn in as president, his administration will begin implementing a campaign pledge to deport illegal immigrants en masse.

A major immigration sweep is expected to begin in Chicago on the morning of January 21 and last throughout the week, with up to 200 officers from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency expected to be deployed, according to a source.

The Trump transition team has yet to officially respond to the report. However, a source familiar with the new administration’s plans said ICE will increase enforcement nationwide, not just in Chicago, and there are no plans to increase its presence there.

The newspaper also said the main targets of the operation were illegal immigrants with criminal records residing in the US. Cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Denver and Miami were also in the government's sights.

“We will be operating nationwide. Arrests will be made in New York, Miami and other cities,” the source said.

When asked about this information, “border czar” Tom Homan said ICE will operate across the country.

“Chicago is just one of many locations. We have 24 field offices across the country. On January 22, ICE will go out and do their job. We told ICE they will enforce the law, so there’s no need to be apologetic. They will focus on the worst problems first, the threats to public safety first, but every issue will be considered. If someone comes in illegally, they will be in trouble,” Homan said.

Earlier, CNN reported that Mr. Trump's team was finalizing a series of strict policies to crack down on immigration, expected to be issued within hours of his inauguration on January 20. These measures will create a major change in immigration policy, affecting both those residing in the US and asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border.

ICE will conduct raids in major cities, increase Pentagon resources at the southern border, impose new restrictions on entry into the United States, and reverse many policies of the previous administration, the source added. They will first focus on undocumented immigrants with criminal records who are eligible for deportation in major cities.

Immigration is a central issue in Mr Trump's campaign ahead of the presidential election on November 5, 2024.

“Immediately after my inauguration, I will launch the largest deportation campaign in American history,” Mr. Trump declared in January 2024.

Reuters news agency reported that Mr. Trump plans to mobilize government agencies across the country to help him deport record numbers of immigrants, building on efforts during his first term to tap every available resource and pressure so-called “sanctuary” areas to cooperate with federal authorities.
