On November 18, local time, US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed that he plans to declare a national emergency on border security and use the US military to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Immigration was a prominent issue during the election campaign, with Trump pledging to deport millions and secure the border with Mexico after record numbers of illegal migrants crossed the border during President Joe Biden's term, AFP reported.

On his Truth Social social media platform, Mr. Trump highlighted a recent post by a conservative activist who said the president-elect “is ready to declare a national emergency and will use military force to reverse the Biden ‘incursion’ through mass deportation.”

Mr. Trump added in the post: “Exactly!”

Republican candidate Donald Trump won a stunning victory to return to the White House in the November 5 election, defeating Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

After his victory, Mr. Trump announced a cabinet with many hardliners on immigration issues, including appointing former acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tom Homan as “border envoy”.

“I want to send a message to the millions of illegal immigrants that (President) Joe Biden has let into our country: You better start packing now,” Homan said at the Republican National Convention in July.

US authorities estimate that about 11 million people are living in the country without legal documents. Mr. Trump's deportation plan is expected to directly affect about 20 million families.

While the US government has struggled for years to control the southern border with Mexico, Mr Trump has raised concerns by claiming there is an “invasion” of migrants and has frequently mentioned immigration during his election campaign.

Mr. Trump has not released details of his plans to tighten immigration but has repeatedly pledged during the campaign to invoke the 1798 Hostile Alien Act to speed up deportations.

The Hindustan Times reported on November 18 that the number of encounters between US border patrol agents and migrants illegally crossing the border from Mexico is now roughly the same as in 2020, the last year of Mr. Trump's first term, after reaching a record 250,000 cases in December 2023.
